Itinerary

Day 1: Addis Ababa – Dinsho (Park HQ)

  • Morning drive from Addis Ababa to Dinsho via Shashamane (approx. 7–8 hrs).

  • Lunch en route.

  • Arrive at Bale Mountains National Park HQ for entry permits and briefing.

  • Short acclimatization walk around Dinsho, spotting mountain nyala and Menelik’s bushbuck.

  • Overnight: Dinsho basic lodge or campsite.


Day 2: Dinsho – Sodota Camp (Approx. 18 km | 6–7 hrs)

  • Begin trekking through lush juniper and Hagenia forests.

  • Cross the Worgona Valley, home to endemic bird species.

  • Arrive at Sodota Camp, set amidst rolling Afro-alpine meadows.

  • Overnight: Camping with full board.


Day 3: Sodota – Wasema Valley Camp (Approx. 20 km | 7 hrs)

  • Trek through the Sanetti Plateau with views of dramatic volcanic ridges.

  • Spot Ethiopian wolves, giant mole rats, and endemic birds like the Blue-winged goose.

  • Camp in Wasema Valley near a pristine stream.

  • Overnight: Camping.


Day 4: Wasema – Rafu Camp (Approx. 18 km | 6 hrs)

  • Continue trekking across moorlands dotted with giant lobelias.

  • Optional side trip to Mount Tulu Dimtu (4,377m), the second-highest peak in Ethiopia.

  • Overnight at Rafu Camp.


Day 5: Rafu – Harenna Forest Edge

  • Descend into the Harenna Forest, one of Ethiopia’s last remaining cloud forests.

  • Experience a dramatic change from high-altitude moorland to lush green forest.

  • Explore bamboo groves and spot monkeys and forest birds.

  • Overnight: Camp or basic lodge in Harenna.


Day 6: Harenna – Addis Ababa

  • Morning nature walk in the forest.

  • Return drive to Addis Ababa with stops for scenic views and lunch.

  • Drop-off at your hotel or airport.
